To avoid wasting water and having a potentially high water bill, check your home for leaky faucets periodically. Fix any leaks that you find right away. You may be able to do the repair yourself, but if not, you may have to seek the services of a plumber to make the repairs.

Be careful about using liquid clog cleaners. These liquids can contain chemicals that are extremely bad for your pipes. Instead, use a snake or a plunger to dislodge any clogs you might encounter. Be sure to try these things before giving up and calling a plumber, who will probably re-perform those same acts.

Certain things shouldn't go into your plumbing system. By knowing what you can and cannot flush or throw into the garbage disposal and sink, you can save yourself from a costly repair or disaster. A plumber can usually get your plumbing back into working condition, but can be avoided if you know how to dispose of items correctly.

To lessen the chances of toilet problems, do not use as a place to put trash. Don't flush items like paper towels, sanitary napkins, diapers or cotton balls, because these items don't break down and may cause clogging issues. Reduce your use of toilet paper if you notice frequent clogs.

If your plumbing is making strange noises you may have lost something called your "air cushion". To turn this back on, you're going to need to turn off your main water supply. Run all faucets in your house and then turn back on your main water supply. This should make everything sound better again.

Be sure that the dryer's lint trap is clean. This will save you trouble, such as preventing fires. Check your lint trap for holes to make sure the lint is not going in your plumbing system.

Frozen pipes are on of the most expensive plumbing problems. It can also be easily prevented. The most important step is to keep any pipes close to the outside, well insulated. Before the cold season arrives, you should disconnect your hoses, drain them and store them. Outdoor faucets should be shut off, too. This will keep you from paying too much to your plumber.

Avoid using harsh chemicals to clear clogged drains by purchasing a hand-held manual auger. A drain auger is a one-time purchase as opposed to purchasing a new bottle every time a drain is clogged. This is especially helpful for people who deal with clogged drains often, such as people with long hair or kids who like to drop things down the drain.

If you have drains in your house that have not been used for a long period of time, pour one gallon of water through them to keep them functional. Furthermore, this will have the added benefit of reducing any odors from entering your house from lack of use during the year.

Avoid pouring grease or oil down your kitchen sink drain. Grease and oil can build up in your pipes and cause a backup. Instead, wait for the grease or oil to cool and solidify furnace repair service and either throw it away or see if there's a place to recycle it near your home.

Fraudulent plumber's work 'a disgrace'

A judge told a plumber who defrauded at least a dozen people across south-west England the standard of his work was a "disgrace".

Brad Fairman, 26, of William Morris Way, Swindon, received a 20-month suspended sentence and 160 hours community service.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of fraudulent trading.

Recorder of Bristol, Judge Peter Blair QC, said: "You fobbed people off and didn't provide what you promised."

Bristol Crown Court heard Fairman had defrauded victims between 2016 and 2019 using a variety of names, including Jack Plumb, and taking money for jobs that were never completed.

One customer paid Fairman £10,000 for a boiler that was never fitted. Another lost about £7,000 after having to get his work refitting her bathroom repaired by a different plumber.

'Bodger not cowboy'

He also gave numerous excuses for failing to carry out work, including that he had a brain tumour, that his tools had been stolen and that he had been involved in a biking accident, the court was told.

Defending, George Threlfall said most of Fairman's customers were satisfied with his work and claimed he was a "bodger rather than a cowboy".

They added that he did not have a "deeply-ingrained criminal personality" but was "in way over his head", taking on work he was not capable of doing".

The sentencing came after an investigation carried out by the National Trading Standards Regional Investigation Team (South West).

The judge told Fairman: "You secured work way beyond your ability to complete it. You should have stopped trading and refunded people.

"Customers had the misery of finding alternative traders to put right what you'd got wrong."

Fairman will also be subject to a curfew for the next three months.
